CHINA’S NATIONAL FLAG, EMBLEM AND ANTHEM

National Flag


The national flag of the People’s Republic of China is a rectangular red flag. In the upper left section are five yellow stars – one big star in the centre and four small stars in a semicircle on its right. ‘The big star symbolizes the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the small ones symbolize the people rallying around the CPC.
[Rozmiar: 1888 bajtów] The national flag was designed on the basis of consulting the broad masses. In July 1949 the preparatory committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) solicited opinions on the national flag’s design from all people of the country and overseas Chinese. Finally this design was settled on. Its designer was Zeng – Lian – song, a staff member of the former Shanghai Modern Economic News Agency.

National Emblem

The national emblem of the People’s Republic of China is the Tian’anmen Gatein the centre illuminated by five stars and encircled by ears of grain and a cogwheel. It symbolizes the people’s democratic dictatorship established in New China, led by the working class and based on the alliance of workers and peasants. On June 18, 1950 the Second Session of the First National Committee of the CPPCC adopted the People’s Republic of China’s national emblem and its explanation. On September 20 of the same year, Chairman Mao Zedong ordered the promulgation of the national emblem of the People’s Republic of China.

On the eve of the birth of the People’s Republic of China, on October 1, 1949 Qinghua University and the Central Academy of Fine Arts set up a national emblem design group. They solicited several hundred designs from around the country. Through their repeated comparisons and improvements, the design of the present national emblem was completed. On the national emblem the Tian’anmen Gate is the emblem of the national spirit; the ears of grain and the cogwheel symbolize the peasants and workers; and five stars indicate the unity of people throughout the country under the leadership of the CPC.





National Anthem



[Rozmiar: 2499 bajtów] The national Anthem of the People’s Republic of China is the ‘March of Volunteers’ written by Tian Han and with music by Nie Er. In 1935 the Japanese invaded China. The creation of the ‘March of the Volunteers’ at that time, when the nation’s existence was in peril, encouraged people to rise against the Japanese aggressors and defend the country. This song had a far-reaching influence among the masses and played a great role in arousing the Chinese people’s patriotic spirit. Therefore, it was made the tentative national anthem a the First CPPCC session, held in September 1949, so as to show that the Chinese people value their revolutionary tradition and are constantly vigilant in peace time.

On December 4, 1982 the Fifth Session of the Fifth National People’s Congress adopted the resolution on the People’s Republic of China’s national anthem. From then on, the ‘March of the Volunteers’ became the national anthem of the PRC.
